Sustainability and Wireless Power

Many companies, large and small, are investing in sustainability initiatives. Visit the Web site of practically any Fortune 500 company and you’ll find a sustainability section. Scorecards and KPIs are being developed and goals are being set at the local level all the way up to the United Nations.

If we look at one such scorecard, The Sustainability Scorecard, we see several tangible items in the ‘environmental stewardship area’:

  • Environmental footprint – operations – which measures, for instance, what the environmental footprint of the company’s buildings area.
  • Supply chain – which looks at how the company products are made.
  • Environmental footprint – products – measuring how the company’s products impact the environment.

Some of these efforts might look like long-term projects, such as building LEED-certified green buildings when an expansion is appropriate. 

Wireless power, on the other hand, can help achieve significant sustainability gains in a fairly short time. 

On the environmental footprint from operations, wireless power can replace or eliminate batteries and their associated cost and environmental impact. This is applicable to factory sensors, smart building sensors, battery-operated devices in restrooms and more. It not only does it provide sustainability gains but also cost savings from battery costs and the manpower cost to replace them.

Building wireless power into products can make an even bigger impact in the “environmental footprint – products” category because these same savings can be now experienced by customers buying the company’s products.

Before you start building that LEED-certified building towards your sustainability goals, think about long-range wireless charging as a way to achieve significant gains with a smaller investment.
