5G Speeds will make Devices Hungry for Power26 May 2019
It is well known that increasing the speed of an electrical circuit will increase its power consumption. For instance, the graph below shows how power consumption changes based on clock speed for certain Intel i7 CPUs.
The promise of 5G is lightning-fast speed. By itself, that will increase the power consumption of IoT and other connected devices. If devices also report more often, power consumption will continue to increase.
Where is this power coming from? If from a battery, then either battery will need to be substantially larger, or they will need to be replaced more often. In short, 5G speeds will push device manufacturers towards battery alternatives and will increase the demand for long-range wireless charging.
